UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68228: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: chips-media: wave5: Move srcbuf Removal to finishencode During encoder processing, there is a case where the IRQ response could return the buffer back to userspace via v4l2m2mbufdone call. In this time, userspace could queue up this same buffer before startencode removes the index from the ready queue. This would then lead to a case where the buffer in the ready queue could be a self loop due to the WRITEONCE(prev->next, new) call in listadd. When listdel is finally called, the loop is already made so nothing points back to ready queue list head and pointers are poisoned. A buffer should not be marked as DONE before the buffer is removed from m2m ready queue. Move removal entirely to finishencode.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
The affected software list includes Ubuntu linux-riscv, linux-realtime, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-azure-fde, linux-gke, linux-hwe-edge, and linux-gkeop kernel packages. Exposure requires use of the Wave5 media encoder path through V4L2 memory-to-memory processing.
What does an attacker need to do to trigger the flaw?
An attacker needs local, low-privileged access and must be able to interact with the affected encoder processing path. The triggering condition involves re-queuing a buffer after an IRQ response returns it to userspace, before the buffer index is removed from the media-to-memory ready queue.
What is the expected impact if exploitation succeeds?
The race can create a self-loop in the ready queue and result in poisoned list pointers when the buffer is removed. The supplied severity vector indicates availability impact is high, while confidentiality and integrity impacts are rated none.
