UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68229: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: cedrus: skip invalid H.264 reference list entries Cedrus consumes H.264 refpiclist0/refpiclist1 entries from the stateless slice control and later uses their indices to look up decode->dpb[] in cedruswritereflist(). Rejecting such controls in cedrustryctrl() would break existing userspace, since stateless H.264 reference lists may legitimately carry out-of-range indices for missing references. Instead, guard the actual DPB lookup in Cedrus and skip entries whose indices do not fit the fixed V4L2H264NUMDPBENTRIES array. This keeps the fix local to the driver use site and avoids out-of-bounds reads from malformed or unsupported reference list entries.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is exposed to this issue?
Systems using the affected Ubuntu Linux kernel packages are exposed when the Cedrus media driver processes stateless H.264 slice controls containing invalid reference-list indices. The issue is locally exploitable and requires low privileges.
What does an attacker need to do to exploit it?
An attacker needs local access with low privileges and must cause the Cedrus driver to process malformed or unsupported H.264 reference-list entries. No user interaction is required.
What is the impact of successful exploitation?
The invalid indices can lead to out-of-bounds reads during Cedrus decoded-picture-buffer lookup. The reported impact includes high confidentiality impact and high availability impact; integrity impact is not indicated.
How does the fix mitigate the problem?
The fix validates reference-list indices at the Cedrus driver lookup site and skips entries that do not fit within the fixed H.264 DPB array. It does not reject the entire control, because out-of-range entries can legitimately represent missing references.
