UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68255: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/virtio: bound EDID block reads to the response buffer virtiogetedidblock() validates the read offset only against the device-supplied resp->size field, never against the fixed-size resp->edid array. The EDID block index is driven by the device-supplied extension count, so a malicious virtio-gpu backend can advertise a large size together with a high block count and read far past the array into adjacent kernel memory, which is then surfaced in the parsed EDID (an out-of-bounds read / info leak). Also reject any read whose end exceeds the size of the edid array. Conforming EDID responses stay within the array and are unaffected.

In virtio_get_edid_block(), reject any EDID read whose end exceeds the size of the response's fixed-size resp->edid array, rather than validating only against resp->size.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are realistically exposed to this issue?
Systems using the affected Ubuntu kernel packages with the virtio-gpu driver and a malicious or compromised virtio-gpu backend are exposed. The affected package list includes ubuntu/linux and the listed Azure, GCP, AWS FIPS, FIPS, and realtime kernel variants.
What does an attacker need to exploit it?
The attacker needs control of the virtio-gpu backend, allowing it to return crafted EDID metadata with an oversized response size and a high extension-block count. No privileges or user interaction are required according to the supplied severity vector, but exploitation is local.
Are normal EDID responses affected?
No. Conforming EDID responses remain within the fixed EDID response array and are unaffected.
What is the impact of successful exploitation?
A crafted backend can cause an out-of-bounds kernel memory read past the EDID array. The disclosed memory can be incorporated into parsed EDID data, creating an information leak; the severity vector also rates availability impact as high.
