UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68256: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amd/display: detectlinkandlocalsink: DP alt mode timeout path leaks prevsink reference prevsink is unconditionally retained via dcsinkretain at function entry, but the DP alt mode timeout path inside SIGNALTYPEDISPLAYPORT returns false without releasing prevsink. All other return paths in the function correctly call dcsinkrelease(prevsink), making this the only missing cleanup. (cherry picked from commit 45510cf662dcf46b5d8926d454f338809f107b9d)

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
The issue applies to the listed Ubuntu kernel packages: linux-riscv, linux-realtime, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-azure-fde, linux-gke, linux-hwe-edge, and linux-gkeop. The affected code path is associated with AMD DisplayPort alternate-mode handling.
What condition is needed to trigger the leak?
The leak occurs when detect_link_and_local_sink takes the DisplayPort alternate-mode timeout path. On that path, the function returns without releasing a previously retained sink reference.
What is the impact of repeated triggering?
Each trigger can leave a prev_sink reference retained rather than released. The provided information identifies this as a reference leak, but does not quantify resource exhaustion or other downstream impact.
Is there a known workaround if an updated kernel cannot be deployed immediately?
No workaround or mitigation is provided in the available data. The documented resolution is the kernel change that releases prev_sink on the DisplayPort alternate-mode timeout return path.
