UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68299: High severity ubuntu/linux-aws vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: vmxnet3: fix BUGON in vmxnet3gethdrlen() for Geneve packets vmxnet3gethdrlen() assumes gdesc->rcd.v4/v6/tcp always describe the outer header, but for a Geneve-encapsulated packet the device can set them based on the inner header instead, signalled by the VMXNET3RCDHDRINNERSHIFT bit in the completion descriptor. Since the function never skips the outer encapsulation, this mismatch triggers: - BUGON(hdr.ipv4->protocol != IPPROTOTCP), because the outer protocol is UDP (Geneve), not TCP. - BUGON(hdr.eth->hproto != ...), when the tunnel's outer and inner IP versions differ (e.g. outer IPv6/inner IPv4 or vice versa). Check VMXNET3RCDHDRINNERSHIFT up front and bail out, since the function cannot locate the inner header it would need to parse. Also convert the remaining BUGON()s in this function to return 0 defensively.

In vmxnet3_get_hdr_len(), check VMXNET3_RCD_HDR_INNER_SHIFT before parsing and bail out if set because the function cannot locate the inner header; convert the remaining BUG_ON() checks, including the outer/inner IP-version and protocol mismatches, to defensive returns of 0.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Ubuntu systems running one of the listed Linux kernel packages are potentially exposed when they use the vmxnet3 network driver and process Geneve-encapsulated traffic. The affected package list includes standard, AWS, Azure, GCP, and FIPS kernel variants.
What traffic condition can trigger the failure?
A Geneve-encapsulated packet can trigger the failure when its completion descriptor reports header information for the inner packet rather than the outer header. Differing outer and inner IP versions can also trigger a protocol mismatch check.
Does exploitation require authentication or user interaction?
The supplied severity vector indicates network reachability, low attack complexity, no privileges required, and no user interaction. The documented impact is availability loss.
What can be done if an updated kernel cannot be deployed immediately?
The provided information identifies Geneve-encapsulated traffic as the trigger condition. Limiting or avoiding such traffic on systems using vmxnet3 can reduce exposure until the kernel fix is deployed.
