UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68300: Critical severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: sctp: auth: verify auth requirement when authchunk is NULL sctpauthchunkverify() returns true unconditionally when chunk->authchunk is NULL, silently skipping authentication. This is incorrect when: 1. skbclone() failed in the BH receive path, leaving authchunk NULL. In sctpendpointbhrcv() asoc is NULL for new connections, so the early sctpauthrecvcid() check cannot catch this. 2. No AUTH chunk precedes COOKIE-ECHO, so skbclone() is never called and authchunk remains NULL. Fix by checking sctpauthrecvcid() when authchunk is NULL: if authentication is required, return false to drop the chunk; otherwise continue normally.

Update sctp_auth_recv_cid() to check for a NULL auth_chunk: return false to drop the chunk when authentication is required; otherwise continue normally.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed software includes ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp, and ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips.
Under what conditions can SCTP authentication be bypassed?
The issue occurs when sctp_auth_chunk_verify() receives a chunk with auth_chunk set to NULL. This can happen if skb_clone() fails in the BH receive path, or when no AUTH chunk appears before COOKIE-ECHO and cloning is therefore not attempted.
Are new SCTP connections relevant to this issue?
Yes. For new connections, asoc is NULL in sctp_endpoint_bh_rcv(), so the earlier sctp_auth_recv_cid() check cannot detect the missing authentication state.
What does the fix change?
When auth_chunk is NULL, the fix checks whether authentication is required using sctp_auth_recv_cid(). Chunks are dropped if authentication is required; otherwise processing continues normally.
