UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68333: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dpaa2-switch: put MAC endpoint device on disconnect fslmcgetendpoint() returns the MAC endpoint device with a reference taken through devicefindchild(). The switch port connect path stores that device in mac->mcdev and keeps it for the lifetime of the connected MAC object. However, the disconnect path only closes the MAC and frees the dpaa2mac object. It does not drop the endpoint device reference stored in mac->mcdev, so every successful connect leaks that device reference when the MAC is later disconnected. Drop the endpoint device reference before freeing the dpaa2mac object.

Frequently Asked Questions
What systems are realistically exposed to this issue?
Systems using the Linux kernel DPAA2 switch driver and performing MAC endpoint connect and disconnect operations are exposed. The affected Ubuntu kernel package families listed are linux, linux-realtime, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-azure-fde, linux-gke, linux-riscv, and linux-gkeop.
What activity triggers the leak?
A successful switch-port connection that obtains a MAC endpoint device, followed by disconnection, leaks the endpoint device reference. Repeating connect and disconnect cycles can accumulate leaked device references.
How can I tell whether a system may be affected?
Review whether the DPAA2 switch driver is in use and whether MAC endpoints are being connected and later disconnected. The issue specifically concerns the disconnect path failing to release the device reference retained for the connected MAC object.
What is the remediation?
Use a kernel containing the fix that drops the MAC endpoint device reference before freeing the dpaa2_mac object during disconnect. If updating is not immediately possible, avoid repeated MAC endpoint connect and disconnect operations where operationally feasible.
