UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68353: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: ath6kl: fix OOB read from firmware nummsg in TX complete handler The firmware-controlled nummsg field (u8, 0-255) drives the loop in ath6klwmitxcompleteeventrx() without validation against the buffer length. This allows out-of-bounds reads of up to 1020 bytes past the WMI event buffer when the firmware sends an inflated nummsg. Add a check that the buffer is large enough to hold the fixed struct and the nummsg variable-length entries.

In ath6kl_wmi_tx_complete_event_rx(), validate that the WMI event buffer is large enough to contain the fixed struct and all num_msg variable-length entries before processing the firmware-controlled num_msg loop.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are realistically exposed to this issue?
Systems running one of the listed Ubuntu kernel packages are potentially affected when they use the ath6kl Wi-Fi driver and receive firmware TX-completion events. The issue is in the driver’s handling of firmware-controlled event data.
What does an attacker need to exploit the flaw?
The vulnerable code processes a firmware-controlled num_msg value without validating that the WMI event buffer contains the claimed number of entries. Exploitation requires delivery of a malformed TX-completion event with an inflated num_msg value; no privileges or user interaction are indicated by the supplied vector.
What happens when a malformed event is processed?
The driver can read beyond the end of the WMI event buffer. With the maximum 8-bit num_msg value, the out-of-bounds read can extend up to 1020 bytes past that buffer.
What mitigation is available if updating is not immediately possible?
The provided data identifies validation of the firmware event length as the required fix. No alternative configuration workaround or temporary mitigation is specified.
