UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68359: Race Condition
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: hwmon: (nzxt-smart2) Stop device IO before calling hidhwstop Calling hidhwstop() does not stop the device IO. This results in a race condition between hidinputreport() and the point immediately following the execution of hiddeviceiostart() within the driver probe function. If the probe operation fails after "io start" has been initiated, this race condition will result in a UAF vulnerability. Fix the problem by calling hiddeviceiostop() before calling hidhwstop().

In the hwmon (nzxt-smart2) driver, call hid_device_io_stop() before calling hid_hw_stop(), particularly when the probe operation fails after hid_device_io_start() has been initiated.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems running one of the listed Ubuntu kernel packages may be exposed when using hardware supported by the nzxt-smart2 hwmon driver. The issue is in the driver's device-probe failure path.
What conditions are required to trigger the use-after-free?
Device I/O must have been started during driver probe, and the probe must then fail. In that state, hid_input_report() can race with cleanup performed after hid_device_io_start().
Is exploitation dependent on an attacker having access to a device?
The available information identifies a race involving the nzxt-smart2 HID hardware-monitoring driver and device I/O during probing. It does not state what level of attacker access, device control, or input capability is required to exploit the race.
What does the fix change?
The fix stops device I/O with hid_device_io_stop() before calling hid_hw_stop(). This prevents input reports from racing with driver cleanup after a failed probe.
