UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68373: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: at76c50x-usb: avoid length underflow in at76guessfreq() at76guessfreq() checks only that the received frame is at least a bare 802.11 header (24 bytes) before subtracting the fixed management-body offset: len -= eloff; For both beacon and probe response frames, eloff is 36. If the frame is shorter than eloff, subtracting it causes the calculated IE length to wrap. The length is eventually passed to cfg80211findelemmatch() as a very large unsigned value, so the element walk runs beyond the RX skb. This path is reached from at76rxtasklet() while scanning. If the device delivers a truncated beacon or probe response, the oversized IE length causes an out-of-bounds read during scanning. Skip the IE lookup if the frame does not reach the variable elements, before subtracting eloff.

In at76_guess_freq(), skip the information-element lookup when the received frame is shorter than el_off (36 bytes for beacon and probe response frames), before subtracting el_off from the frame length.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ubuntu systems are potentially exposed?
Systems running one of the listed Ubuntu kernel packages are potentially affected when they use the at76c50x-usb Wi-Fi driver. The vulnerable path is exercised while the device is scanning.
What does an attacker need to exploit this issue?
An attacker needs to be able to deliver a truncated beacon or probe-response frame to the affected Wi-Fi device during scanning. The supplied vector indicates adjacent-network access and requires neither privileges nor user interaction.
What is the impact of a malformed frame?
A truncated management frame can cause the driver to calculate an oversized information-element length and read beyond the received packet buffer. The stated severity vector rates confidentiality and availability impact as high, with no integrity impact.
