UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68403: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-aws vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: brcmfmac: initialize SDIO data work before cleanup brcmfsdioprobe() stores the newly allocated bus in sdiodev->bus before allocating the ordered workqueue. If that allocation fails, the function jumps to fail and calls brcmfsdioremove(). brcmfsdioremove() unconditionally cancels bus->datawork. Initialize the work item before the first failure path that can reach brcmfsdioremove(), so the cleanup path always observes a valid work object. This issue was found by our static analysis tool and then confirmed by manual review of the probe error path and the remove-time work drain. The problem pattern is an early setup failure that reaches a cleanup helper which cancels an embedded work item before its initializer has run. A QEMU PoC forced allocorderedworkqueue() to fail at the same point in brcmfsdioprobe(), before INITWORK(&bus->datawork) is reached. The resulting fail path calls brcmfsdioremove(), and DEBUGOBJECTS reports the invalid work drain with brcmfsdioprobe() and brcmfsdioremove() in the stack.

In brcmf_sdio_probe(), initialize the SDIO data work item before the first failure path that can reach brcmf_sdio_remove(), ensuring bus->datawork is initialized before it can be unconditionally cancelled during cleanup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Under what conditions can this issue be triggered?
It is triggered during the brcmfmac SDIO probe path when allocation of the ordered workqueue fails after the bus has been stored but before its data work item is initialized. The subsequent cleanup path unconditionally cancels that uninitialized work item.
Is this likely to be reachable during ordinary operation?
The described trigger requires an early workqueue-allocation failure during device probing. The issue was reproduced by forcing alloc_ordered_workqueue() to fail in QEMU, so exposure depends on encountering that allocation failure path rather than normal successful initialization.
How can I identify affected systems or evidence of the failure?
Affected Ubuntu kernel package families listed are linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-aws-fips, linux-azure-fips, linux-gcp, and linux-gcp-fips. DEBUG_OBJECTS can report an invalid work drain, with brcmf_sdio_probe() and brcmf_sdio_remove() appearing in the stack.
