UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68410: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: libertas: fix memory leak in helperfirmwarecb() helperfirmwarecb() neglects to free the single-stage firmware image after a successful async load, leading to a memory leak in the USB firmware-download path. Fix this memory leak by calling releasefirmware() immediately after lbsfwloaded() returns. The bug was first flagged by an experimental analysis tool we are developing for kernel memory-management bugs while analyzing v6.13-rc1. The tool is still under development and is not yet publicly available. Manual inspection confirms that the bug is still present in the current wireless tree. An x8664 allyesconfig build showed no new warnings. As we do not have compatible Libertas USB hardware for exercising this firmware-download path, no runtime testing was able to be performed.

In the Linux kernel Libertas driver, update helper_firmware_cb() to call release_firmware() immediately after lbs_fw_loaded() returns, freeing the single-stage firmware image after a successful asynchronous load.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
The affected path is the Libertas USB firmware-download path. Systems using Libertas USB wireless hardware and triggering an asynchronous single-stage firmware load are the relevant exposure case.
What is the practical impact of exploitation?
A successful asynchronous firmware load can leak the single-stage firmware image because it is not released after loading. The provided information identifies this as a memory leak and does not describe code execution, privilege escalation, or data exposure.
How can I tell whether this affects my deployment?
Check whether the system uses a Libertas USB wireless device and relies on its USB firmware-download path. The issue was confirmed by manual inspection in the current wireless tree, but runtime testing was not performed because compatible hardware was unavailable.
