UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68414: Use After Free
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: cfg80211: cancel sched scan results work on unregister cfg80211schedscanresults() can queue rdev->schedscanreswk from a driver result notification while a scheduled scan request is present. The work callback recovers the containing cfg80211registereddevice and then locks the wiphy and walks the scheduled-scan request list. wiphyunregister() already makes the wiphy unreachable and drains rdev work items before cfg80211devfree() can release the object, but it does not drain schedscanreswk. A queued or running result work item can therefore cross the unregister/free boundary and access freed rdev state. The buggy scenario involves two paths, with each column showing the order within that path: scheduled-scan result path: unregister/free path: 1. cfg80211schedscanresults() 1. interface teardown stops and queues rdev->schedscanreswk. removes the scheduled scan request. 2. cfg80211wq starts the work 2. wiphyunregister() drains other item and recovers rdev. rdev work items. 3. The worker locks rdev->wiphy 3. cfg80211devfree() destroys and and walks rdev state. frees rdev. Cancel schedscanreswk in wiphyunregister() alongside the other rdev work items. cancelworksync() removes a pending result notification and waits for an already running callback, so cfg80211devfree() cannot free rdev while this work item is still active. Cancel sched_scan_res_wk in wiphy_unregister() alongside the other rdev work items, using cancel_work_sync() to remove pending result notifications and wait for any running callback before cfg80211_dev_free() releases rdev.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ubuntu kernel package families are listed as affected?
The listed software includes ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp, and ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips.
What conditions are required for the use-after-free to occur?
A scheduled-scan result notification must queue or run the scheduled-scan results work while interface teardown unregisters the wireless device and frees its registered-device state. The race occurs because the scheduled-scan results work item was not drained during wiphy unregister.
What level of attacker access is indicated by the supplied severity data?
The supplied vector indicates adjacent-network attack reachability, no required privileges, and no user interaction. It also indicates high attack complexity.
