UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68433: High severity ubuntu/linux-aws vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: libceph: bound getversion reply decode to front len handlegetversionreply() uses msg->frontalloclen as the decode boundary for MONGETVERSIONREPLY. That is the size of the reused reply buffer, not the number of bytes actually received. A truncated reply can therefore pass cephdecodeneed() and decode the second u64 from stale tail bytes left in the buffer by an earlier message, causing an uninitialized memory read. Use msg->front.iovlen as the receive-side decode boundary, matching other libceph reply handlers and limiting decoding to the bytes that were actually read from the wire.

In handle_get_version_reply(), use msg->front.iov_len—not msg->front_alloc_len—as the receive-side decode boundary so decoding is limited to bytes actually received from the wire.
Linux kernel libceph MON_GET_VERSION_REPLY decode boundary = msg->front.iov_len

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems running an affected Ubuntu Linux kernel variant with libceph in use are relevant, including the listed generic, AWS, Azure, GCP, FIPS, AWS FIPS, Azure FIPS, and GCP FIPS kernel packages. The vulnerable code processes MON_GET_VERSION_REPLY messages.
What does an attacker need to do to trigger the vulnerability?
An attacker needs to cause libceph to process a truncated MON_GET_VERSION_REPLY. The truncated reply can make the decoder read stale bytes remaining in a reused reply buffer.
What is the impact of successful exploitation?
Successful triggering causes an uninitialized memory read in the kernel's libceph code. The supplied severity vector rates the issue as remotely reachable without privileges or user interaction, with low confidentiality and integrity impact and high availability impact.
What change fixes the issue?
The fix changes the decode boundary from the allocated reply-buffer length, msg->front_alloc_len, to the number of bytes actually received, msg->front.iov_len. This prevents decoding data from stale buffer tail bytes when a reply is truncated.
