UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68443: Race Condition
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: hwmon: (gigabytewaterforce) Stop device IO before calling hidhwstop Calling hidhwstop() does not stop the device IO. This results in a race condition between hidinputreport() and the point immediately following the execution of hiddeviceiostart() within the driver probe function. If the probe operation fails after "io start" has been initiated, this race condition will result in a UAF vulnerability. Fix the problem by calling hiddeviceiostop() before calling hidhwstop().

In the hwmon gigabyte_waterforce driver, call hid_device_io_stop() before calling hid_hw_stop(), including when the probe operation fails after hid_device_io_start() has been initiated.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems running one of the listed Ubuntu kernel packages may be exposed if they use hardware supported by the gigabyte_waterforce hwmon driver. The issue occurs during driver probing when device I/O has started and the probe subsequently fails.
What must happen for the use-after-free condition to occur?
The driver probe must fail after hid_device_io_start() has been called. In that failure path, device input reporting can race with teardown because hid_hw_stop() alone does not stop device I/O.
Is this caused by normal device operation or a specific failure path?
It is tied to a probe failure path rather than successful normal initialization. The vulnerable window exists after device I/O starts and before cleanup stops that I/O.
What is the relevant remediation?
The fix stops device I/O with hid_device_io_stop() before calling hid_hw_stop(). Applying an Ubuntu kernel update containing that change removes the described teardown race.
