UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68457: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ksmbd: use opener credentials for FSCTL mutations SETSPARSE, SETZERODATA and SETCOMPRESSION operate on an open SMB handle but call VFS xattr, fallocate or fileattr helpers with the current ksmbd worker credentials. Those helpers can revalidate inode permissions, ownership and LSM policy independently of the SMB handle access mask. Run each operation with the credentials captured in the target file when the handle was opened. Keep credential handling local to these single-file FSCTLs rather than applying session credentials to the complete IOCTL handler, which also contains handle-less and multi-handle operations.

In ksmbd, run the single-file FSCTL mutations SET_SPARSE, SET_ZERO_DATA, and SET_COMPRESSION with the credentials captured in the target file when the SMB handle was opened, rather than the current ksmbd worker credentials.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is exposed to this issue?
Systems running an affected Ubuntu Linux kernel variant with ksmbd in use are exposed. The affected functionality is limited to SMB FSCTL operations on open file handles.
What access does an attacker need?
An attacker needs low-privileged access and network reachability to the affected service. No user interaction is required.
What operations are involved?
The issue affects the SET_SPARSE, SET_ZERO_DATA, and SET_COMPRESSION FSCTL operations. These operations can invoke xattr, fallocate, or file attribute helpers using ksmbd worker credentials rather than the credentials captured when the file handle was opened.
What is the security impact?
The provided severity vector indicates integrity impact only, with low impact on vulnerable-system integrity. It does not indicate confidentiality or availability impact.
