UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68478: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: memstick: msblock: reject a card that reports too many blocks msbftlinitialize() computes the zone count from the card block count with no bound: msb->zonecount = msb->blockcount / MSBLOCKSINZONE; ... for (i = 0; i < msb->zonecount; i++) msb->freeblockcount[i] = MSBLOCKSINZONE; msb->blockcount is a card value. msbreadbootblocks() reads numberofblocks from the card boot page and byte swaps it. freeblockcount is a fixed int[MSMAXZONES]. MSMAXZONES is 16, so the valid indices are 0 to 15. The init loop above indexes it by zonecount. msbmarkblockused() and msbmarkblockunused() index it by pba / MSBLOCKSINZONE, for pba up to blockcount - 1. A card may report up to 65535 blocks. A blockcount above 8192 (MSMAXZONES MSBLOCKSINZONE) lets the pba index reach 16. That writes past freeblockcount[] and corrupts struct msbdata. A larger count runs the init loop past the end too. A real Memory Stick has at most 16 zones. So it has at most 8192 blocks. msbftlinitialize() now rejects a card that reports more than MSMAXZONES MSBLOCKSINZONE blocks.

Frequently Asked Questions
What systems are realistically exposed to this issue?
Systems using the affected Ubuntu kernel packages are exposed when they process a Memory Stick card through the memstick ms_block driver. The malformed block count comes from the card's boot page, so exploitation requires interaction with a card that reports more than 8192 blocks.
What does an attacker need to do to trigger the flaw?
An attacker needs to provide a malicious or malformed Memory Stick card whose reported number_of_blocks exceeds 8192. This causes out-of-bounds writes to the fixed free_block_count array during initialization or later block accounting.
How can I determine whether a Memory Stick is suspicious?
A real Memory Stick has at most 16 zones and therefore no more than 8192 blocks. A card reporting a block count above 8192 is invalid and is the condition the resolved code now rejects.
What can be done before an updated kernel is deployed?
Do not connect or process untrusted Memory Stick media on affected systems. In particular, avoid cards that report more than 8192 blocks, since that reported value triggers the unsafe indexing.
