UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72023: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: octeontx2-pf: fix SQB pointer leak on init failure otx2inithwresources() initializes SQ aura and pool resources before several later setup steps. On failure, errfreesqptrs only frees SQB pages, leaving the per-SQ sqbptrs arrays behind. Use otx2freesqres() for the SQ unwind path and let it free sqbptrs even when sq->sqe has not been allocated yet. The bug was first flagged by an experimental analysis tool we are developing for kernel memory-management bugs while analyzing v6.13-rc1. The tool is still under development and is not yet publicly available. Manual inspection confirms that the bug is still present in v7.1.1. An x8664 allyesconfig build showed no new warnings. As we do not have an OcteonTX2 PF device and the corresponding AF mailbox setup to test with, no runtime testing was able to be performed.

Use otx2_free_sq_res() for the SQ unwind path so it frees sqb_ptrs even when sq->sqe has not yet been allocated.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are realistically exposed to this issue?
The affected code is in the OcteonTX2 PF driver, so exposure is limited to systems using an OcteonTX2 PF device and its associated AF mailbox setup. The issue is listed for several Ubuntu kernel packages, including linux, linux-realtime, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-gke, linux-riscv, linux-gkeop, and linux-azure-fde.
Under what condition does the memory leak occur?
The leak occurs when otx2_init_hw_resources() has initialized SQ aura and pool resources but a later setup step fails. In that error path, SQB pages are freed while the per-SQ sqb_ptrs arrays are left allocated.
What is the practical impact if the vulnerable error path is triggered?
The described impact is a kernel-memory leak of per-SQ sqb_ptrs arrays during initialization failure handling. The supplied information does not establish runtime exploitability or report runtime testing on OcteonTX2 PF hardware.
How can the issue be remediated?
The upstream fix changes the SQ cleanup path to use otx2_free_sq_res(), which frees sqb_ptrs even if sq->sqe has not yet been allocated. Apply a kernel update containing that fix when one is available for the installed Ubuntu kernel package.
