UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72052: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: ip6gre: require CAPNETADMIN in the device netns for changelink ip6grechangelink() and ip6erspanchangelink() operate on at most two netns, devnet(dev) and the tunnel link netns t->net. They differ once the device is created in or moved to a netns other than the one the request runs in. The rtnl changelink path checks CAPNETADMIN only against devnet(dev), so a caller privileged there but not in t->net can rewrite a tunnel that lives in t->net. Gate both ops on rtnldevlinknetcapable() at their top, before any attribute is parsed.

Gate ip6gre_changelink() and ip6erspan_changelink() at their entry points with rtnl_dev_link_net_capable(), before parsing any attributes, so capability checks cover the tunnel device's netns.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is exposed to this issue?
Systems using the affected Ubuntu Linux kernel packages are exposed where IP6GRE or IP6ERSPAN tunnel devices have been created in, or moved to, a network namespace different from the namespace handling the change request.
What access does an attacker need?
An attacker needs CAP_NET_ADMIN in the network namespace of the device being changed. They do not need CAP_NET_ADMIN in the tunnel's linked network namespace, which is the missing authorization check.
What can an attacker do?
A caller meeting the existing device-namespace permission check can rewrite tunnel configuration in the linked tunnel network namespace without being authorized there. The vulnerability affects the ip6gre_changelink() and ip6erspan_changelink() operations.
How can I determine whether a system is affected in practice?
Check whether IP6GRE or IP6ERSPAN devices are used across differing network namespaces, such as devices created in one namespace and later moved to another. The relevant condition is that dev_net(dev) and the tunnel link namespace t->net are different.
