UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72054: Low severity ubuntu/linux-aws vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: ipvti: require CAPNETADMIN in the device netns for changelink vtichangelink() operates on at most two netns, devnet(dev) and the tunnel link netns t->net. They differ once the device is created in or moved to a netns other than the one the request runs in. The rtnl changelink path checks CAPNETADMIN only against devnet(dev), so a caller privileged there but not in t->net can rewrite a tunnel that lives in t->net. Gate vtichangelink() on rtnldevlinknetcapable() at its top, before any attribute is parsed.

At the top of vti_changelink(), before parsing any attributes, gate the operation on rtnl_dev_link_net_capable() so CAP_NET_ADMIN is required in the device's network namespace.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is exposed to this issue?
Systems using IP VTI tunnel devices are exposed when a tunnel's link network namespace differs from the namespace containing the device, such as after the device is created in or moved to another network namespace. The affected Ubuntu kernel package list includes linux, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, and their listed FIPS variants.
What access does an attacker need?
An attacker needs CAP_NET_ADMIN capability in the network namespace of the VTI device. They do not need CAP_NET_ADMIN in the tunnel link network namespace, which is the missing authorization check addressed by the fix.
What could an attacker do?
A caller meeting the existing device-namespace permission check can rewrite configuration for a VTI tunnel that resides in a different tunnel link network namespace. The reported impact is limited to integrity and availability, with no confidentiality impact indicated.
