UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72061: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: sit: require CAPNETADMIN in the device netns for changelink ipip6changelink() operates on at most two netns, devnet(dev) and the tunnel link netns t->net. They differ once the device is created in or moved to a netns other than the one the request runs in. The rtnl changelink path checks CAPNETADMIN only against devnet(dev), so a caller privileged there but not in t->net can rewrite a tunnel that lives in t->net. Gate ipip6changelink() on rtnldevlinknetcapable() at its top, before any attribute is parsed. sit was the one tunnel type not covered by the recent series that added this check to the other changelink() handlers.

Gate ipip6_changelink() on rtnl_dev_link_net_capable() at the function's top, before parsing any attributes, to require CAP_NET_ADMIN in the device network namespace.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is realistically exposed to this issue?
Systems using the Linux SIT tunnel functionality are exposed when a tunnel device and its associated tunnel link reside in different network namespaces. The affected Ubuntu kernel package families listed are linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, and their listed FIPS variants.
What access does an attacker need?
An attacker needs CAP_NET_ADMIN in the network namespace containing the device used by the changelink request. They do not need CAP_NET_ADMIN in the tunnel link's network namespace, which is the authorization boundary bypassed by this issue.
What can an attacker do if exploitation succeeds?
The attacker can rewrite the configuration of a SIT tunnel located in a different network namespace. The supplied severity vector rates impacts to confidentiality, integrity, and availability as high, with scope changed.
How can I determine whether a system is affected?
Review whether the system uses SIT tunnels and whether tunnel devices have been created or moved so that the device namespace differs from the tunnel link namespace. Also verify whether the installed Ubuntu kernel includes the fix that adds a rtnl_dev_link_net_capable() check at the start of ipip6_changelink().
