UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72066: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-azure vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: cpu: hotplug: Bound hotplug states sysfs output statesshow() adds CPU hotplug state names into a single sysfs buffer using sprintf(). With enough registered states, this can write past the end of the PAGESIZE buffer. Use sysfsemitat() so output is bounded.

In the Linux kernel's states_show() implementation, replace sprintf() with sysfs_emit_at() when appending CPU hotplug state names to ensure sysfs output is bounded by the PAGE_SIZE buffer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is most likely to be exposed?
Systems using the listed Ubuntu kernel packages are potentially exposed, including linux, linux-azure, linux-aws-fips, linux-azure-fips, linux-fips, linux-gcp-fips, linux-gcp, and linux-oracle. Exploitation depends on having enough registered CPU hotplug states to overflow the single sysfs output buffer.
What level of access does an attacker need?
The CVSS vector indicates local access and low privileges are required. No user interaction is required, but the vector also identifies an attack prerequisite condition.
What is the expected impact of successful exploitation?
The provided severity vector indicates no confidentiality impact, low integrity impact, and high availability impact. The issue is a write beyond a PAGE_SIZE sysfs buffer while producing CPU hotplug state output.
