UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72116: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: can: bcm: fix stale rx/tx ops after device removal RX: an RXSETUP update(!) for an existing op skipped canrxregister() unconditionally, even when a concurrent NETDEVUNREGISTER had already torn down its registration (op->rxregdev == NULL). This silently did not re-enable frame delivery for that updated filter. bcmrxsetup() now re-registers in that case, while leaving rxops with ifindex = 0 (all CAN devices) which never carry a tracked rxregdev registered as-is. TX: bcmnotify() only handled bo->rxops on NETDEVUNREGISTER, leaving txops with an active cyclic transmission re-arming its hrtimer indefinitely to execute bcmtxtimeouthandler(). Cancelling the hrtimer prevents the runaway timer and any injection into a later reused ifindex, since nothing else calls bcmcantx() for the op until an explicit TXSETUP update re-arms it. Unlike bcmrxunreg(), which clears the tracked rxregdev for rxops, the ifindex is intentionally left unchanged for txops. bcmtxsetup() always rejects ifindex 0, so clearing it would strand the op: neither a later TXSETUP (bcmfindop()) nor TXDELETE (bcmdeletetxop()) could ever find it again, since both require an exact ifindex match.

Cancel the hrtimer for the affected cyclic TX operation during device removal so it cannot re-arm indefinitely or execute bcm_tx_timeout_handler() against a later reused ifindex.

Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required to trigger this issue?
An attacker needs local access with low privileges and must be able to interact with the Linux CAN BCM subsystem. The issue involves concurrent CAN device unregistration and BCM RX or cyclic TX operations.
What is the practical impact of the TX-side flaw?
After a CAN device is removed, an active cyclic TX operation can keep re-arming its high-resolution timer indefinitely. This can lead to runaway timer activity and could inject frames if the removed interface index is later reused.
How can systems be checked for exposure?
Assess whether the affected Ubuntu kernel packages are in use and whether the system uses the CAN BCM subsystem with RX filters or cyclic CAN transmissions. The supplied data does not identify fixed package versions.
What mitigation is available if an update cannot be applied immediately?
Avoid or restrict use of CAN BCM cyclic TX operations and concurrent CAN device removal. Preventing untrusted local users from accessing CAN interfaces or configuring BCM operations reduces the stated low-privilege local attack opportunity.
