UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72142: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-aws vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: i2c: imx: fix locked bus on SMBus block-read of 0 (atomic) SMBus 3.1 6.5.7 allows a Block Read byte count of 0, but the atomic (polling) path rejects it as -EPROTO. Worse, it returns without a NACK+STOP: the next receive cycle has already started, so the target keeps holding SDA and the bus stays stuck until a power cycle for this i2c controller. Reading I2DR to obtain the count likewise arms the next byte on the count > I2CSMBUSBLOCKMAX path, which also returned -EPROTO directly and left the bus held. Handle both: NACK the in-flight dummy byte (TXAK) and extend msgs->len so the existing last-byte handling emits STOP; the dummy byte is discarded. A count of 0 is a valid empty block read; a count above I2CSMBUSBLOCKMAX is still reported as -EPROTO, but only after the bus has been released. The interrupt-driven path has the same flaw from a later commit and is fixed separately, as it carries a different Fixes: tag and stable range.

In the i2c-imx SMBus block-read handling, treat a count of 0 as a valid empty block and, when the count exceeds I2C_SMBUS_BLOCK_MAX, NACK the in-flight dummy byte using TXAK, extend msgs->len so the existing last-byte handling emits STOP, and discard the dummy byte before returning -EPROTO.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to the bus-lock condition?
Systems using the i.MX I2C controller's atomic (polling) SMBus block-read path are exposed. The affected Ubuntu kernel package families listed are linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, and their listed FIPS variants.
What SMBus responses can trigger the problem?
A block-read byte count of 0 can trigger the issue because it was rejected even though SMBus 3.1 permits an empty block read. A byte count above I2C_SMBUS_BLOCK_MAX can also take an error path that previously left the bus unreleased.
What is the operational impact if this occurs?
The target can continue holding SDA, leaving the I2C bus stuck. The description states that recovery requires a power cycle for this I2C controller.
Does the issue affect only polling transfers?
The atomic polling path is covered by this fix. The interrupt-driven path has the same flaw but is addressed separately because it has a different Fixes tag and stable range.
