UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72144: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: platform/x86: dell-laptop: fix missing cleanups in init error path dellinit() initializes several resources after dellsetuprfkill(), including the optional touchpad LED, keyboard backlight LED, battery hook, debugfs directory and dell-laptop notifier. If a later LED or backlight registration fails, the error path only tears down the battery hook and rfkill resources. This leaves the notifier, debugfs directory, keyboard backlight LED and optional touchpad LED registered after dellinit() returns an error. Add the missing cleanup calls before tearing down rfkill.

In dell_init()'s error path, add cleanup calls for the dell-laptop notifier, debugfs directory, keyboard backlight LED, and optional touchpad LED before tearing down rfkill resources.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are most likely exposed to this issue?
The affected component is the Linux kernel's platform/x86 dell-laptop driver, so exposure is relevant to Ubuntu systems using the listed kernel packages on Dell laptop hardware where this driver is initialized.
What conditions are required to trigger the vulnerable path?
The issue occurs when dell_init() has initialized resources after dell_setup_rfkill() and a later optional touchpad LED or keyboard backlight LED registration fails. The incomplete initialization error path can then leave previously registered resources active.
What is the impact of a failed driver initialization?
A failed initialization can leave the dell-laptop notifier, debugfs directory, keyboard backlight LED, and optional touchpad LED registered even though dell_init() returns an error. The intended cleanup of these resources was missing before rfkill teardown.
