UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72153: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-aws vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: irqchip/crossbar: Use correct index in crossbardomainfree() crossbardomainfree() resets the domain data and then uses the nulled out irqdata->hwirq member as index to reset the irqmap[] entry and to write the relevant crossbar register with a safe entry. That means it never frees the correct index and keeps the crossbar register connection to the source interrupt active. If it would not reset the domain data, then this would be even worse as irqdata->hwirq holds the source interrupt number, but both the map and register index need the corresponding GIC SPI number and not the source interrupt number. This might even result in an out of bounds access as the source interrupt number can be higher than the maximal index space. Fix this by using the GIC SPI index from the parent domain's irqdata.

In irqchip/crossbar, update crossbar_domain_free() to use the GIC SPI index from the parent domain's irq_data when resetting the irq_map[] entry and the crossbar register, rather than the nulled child irq_data->hwirq/source interrupt number.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ubuntu kernel package variants are listed for this issue?
The listed variants are ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, and ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips.
What systems are exposed to the faulty cleanup path?
Exposure requires use of the kernel crossbar interrupt-controller path and a crossbar domain free operation. The issue concerns cleanup of an interrupt mapping, where the relevant crossbar connection can remain active.
What is the potential impact of encountering this bug?
The intended interrupt mapping may not be released, leaving the crossbar register connected to the source interrupt. In some cases, using a source interrupt number instead of the corresponding GIC SPI index could cause an out-of-bounds access.
