UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72163: Null Pointer Dereference
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ocfs2: fix NULL htransaction deref in ocfs2assuretranscredits [BUG] A direct write over unwritten extents can panic the kernel in ocfs2assuretranscredits() when the journal aborts during DIO completion. The crash is a general protection fault from a NULL pointer dereference. [CAUSE] ocfs2dioendiowrite() loops over a direct write's unwritten extents, marking each written under a single journal handle. If the journal aborts (for example after an I/O error) while the extent tree is being updated, the handle is left aborted with its transaction pointer cleared. The extent merge treats that failure as not critical and reports success, so the loop keeps using the handle. ocfs2assuretranscredits() reads the handle's remaining credits without first checking whether the handle is aborted, and that read dereferences the cleared transaction pointer. [FIX] A journal abort is recorded in the handle itself, so callers are expected to test the handle rather than rely on a returned error. Make ocfs2assuretranscredits() do that, as the other ocfs2 journal helpers already do, and return -EROFS when the handle is aborted.

Frequently Asked Questions
What systems are realistically exposed to this issue?
Systems using the affected Ubuntu kernel packages that have OCFS2 filesystems and perform direct writes over unwritten extents are exposed. The issue is in the OCFS2 filesystem code path rather than a general kernel operation.
What conditions are needed to trigger the crash?
A direct I/O write must span unwritten extents, and the OCFS2 journal must abort during direct-I/O completion, such as after an I/O error while the extent tree is updated. Continued processing with the aborted journal handle can then cause a NULL pointer dereference and kernel panic.
What is the impact if the issue is triggered?
The described outcome is a kernel general protection fault caused by a NULL pointer dereference, resulting in a kernel panic. This is a denial-of-service condition.
How can administrators identify relevant exposure before patching?
Identify hosts running one of the listed Ubuntu kernel package families and determine whether they use OCFS2. Prioritize systems where OCFS2 workloads use direct I/O writes over unwritten extents and where journal-aborting I/O errors may occur.
