UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72171: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mtd: slram: remove failed entries from the device list registerdevice() links a new slrammtdlist entry before allocating all of the state needed by the entry. If a later allocation, memremap(), or mtddeviceregister() fails, the partially initialized entry remains on the global list. A later cleanup can then dereference or free invalid state from that failed entry. Unwind the partially initialized entry and clear the list tail on each failure path after the entry has been linked.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are in scope?
The affected software list includes Ubuntu linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, and their listed AWS, Azure, and GCP FIPS variants. The provided data does not identify specific fixed or affected package versions.
What level of access does an attacker need?
The CVSS vector indicates local access with low privileges and no user interaction. The vulnerability can affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability at a high level.
What conditions are involved in triggering the flaw?
The issue occurs when slram device registration has already linked an entry into a global list and a later allocation, memremap(), or mtd_device_register() operation fails. The data does not establish whether an attacker can reliably cause those failures or whether a default configuration enables the relevant functionality.
