UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72172: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm/mminit: fix uninitialized struct pages for ZONEDEVICE If DAX memory is hotplugged into an unoccupied subsection of an early section, sectionactivate() reuses the unoptimized boot memmap. However, compoundnrpages() still assumes that vmemmap optimization is in effect and initializes only the reduced number of struct pages. As a result, the remaining tail struct pages are left uninitialized, which can later lead to unexpected behavior or crashes. Fix this by treating early sections as unoptimized when calculating how many struct pages to initialize.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
The issue affects the listed Ubuntu kernel packages when DAX memory is hotplugged into an unoccupied subsection of an early memory section. Systems that do not use this DAX memory hotplug scenario are not described as affected by the available information.
What conditions are required to trigger the problem?
DAX memory must be hotplugged into an unoccupied subsection of an early section. In that condition, the kernel can initialize too few struct page entries, leaving tail entries uninitialized and potentially causing unexpected behavior or crashes.
What is the operational impact if the issue is triggered?
Uninitialized tail struct pages can later cause unexpected behavior or kernel crashes. The reported severity vector also indicates potential high impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability after exploitation.
