UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72176: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm/damon/sysfs-schemes: put stats for schemeadddirs() internal error damonsysfsschemeadddirs() setup the triedregions directory after the stats directory setup is completed. When the triedregions directory setup is failed, the setup function ensures the reference for the tried regions directory is released. Hence the error path should put references on setup succeeded directory objects, starting from the stats directory. However, the error path is putting the triedregions directory instead of the stats directory. As a direct result, the stats directory object is leaked. Worse yet, if the triedregions directory setup failed from the initial allocation, the scheme->triedregions field remains uninitialized. The following kobjectput(&scheme->triedregions->kobj) call in the error path will dereference the uninitialized memory. The setup failures should not be common. But once it happens, the consequence is quite bad. Fix this issue by correctly putting the stats directory instead of the triedregions directory. The issue was discovered [1] by Sashiko.

In damon_sysfs_scheme_add_dirs(), correct the error path to release the stats directory reference (the setup-succeeded directory) instead of dereferencing scheme->tried_regions, whose field may remain uninitialized when its initial allocation fails.
Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required to trigger the vulnerable path?
The issue requires failure while setting up a DAMON sysfs scheme's tried_regions directory, after the stats directory has already been set up. The description notes that such setup failures are not expected to be common.
What is the impact if the setup failure occurs?
The erroneous cleanup path can leak the stats directory object. If tried_regions setup fails during its initial allocation, cleanup can dereference uninitialized memory through scheme->tried_regions, with potentially serious consequences.
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are identified as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, and ubuntu/linux-gkeop.
