UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72179: Low severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: riscv: cacheinfo: Fix node reference leak in populatecacheleaves Currently, the while loop drops the reference to prev in each iteration. If the loop terminates early due to a break, the final ofnodeput(np) correctly drops the reference to the current node. However, if the loop terminates naturally because np == NULL, calling ofnodeput(np) is a no-op. This leaves the last valid node stored in prev without its reference dropped, resulting in a node reference leak. Fix this by changing the final ofnodeput(np) to ofnodeput(prev).

In the Linux kernel riscv cacheinfo populate_cache_leaves code, change the final `of_node_put(np)` to `of_node_put(prev)` to drop the reference to the last valid node and prevent the node reference leak.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips, and ubuntu/linux-realtime.
What happens when the vulnerable code path is reached?
The RISC-V cacheinfo populate_cache_leaves loop can leave the final valid device-tree node reference unreleased when the loop ends naturally. This results in a node reference leak.
Is this an externally exploitable vulnerability?
The provided information describes a kernel resource-reference leak and does not state any remote attack vector, required attacker access, or exploitation conditions. Its listed severity is low.
