UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72181: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mips: sched: Fix CPUMASKOFFSTACK memory corruption This patch addresses a critical memory management flaw. When CONFIGCPUMASKOFFSTACK is enabled, cpumaskvart is a pointer. Consequently, sizeof(newmask) evaluates to the pointer size, causing copyfromuser() to clobber the mask pointer. Furthermore, the old logic performed copyfromuser() before allocating the mask. Fix this by allocating newmask first. To handle variable-sized user masks correctly, use cpumasksize() to truncate overly large user masks or pad undersized masks with zeros before copying the data directly into the allocated buffer.

In the mips scheduler code, allocate new_mask before calling copy_from_user(), and use cpumask_size() to truncate oversized user masks or zero-pad undersized masks before copying directly into the allocated buffer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Exposure is limited to affected Ubuntu kernel packages running on MIPS where CONFIG_CPUMASK_OFFSTACK is enabled. The listed packages include ubuntu/linux and the AWS, Azure, GCP, and FIPS kernel variants.
What access does an attacker need?
An attacker needs local access and low-level privileges; no user interaction is required. Successful exploitation can affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
What configuration condition makes the flaw relevant?
The issue is relevant when CONFIG_CPUMASK_OFFSTACK is enabled, because cpumask_var_t is then a pointer and the vulnerable handling can overwrite that pointer. The provided data does not state whether this option is enabled by default in any listed Ubuntu kernel package.
