UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72213: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm/hugetlb: fix hugetlb cgroup rsvd charge/uncharge mismatch In allochugetlbfolio(), a single hcg pointer is used for both the rsvd and non-rsvd hugetlb cgroup charges. When mapchg is set, hugetlbcgroupchargecgrouprsvd() stores the charged cgroup in hcg, but the immediately following hugetlbcgroupchargecgroup() overwrites hcg with the non-rsvd cgroup pointer. As a result, hugetlbcgroupcommitchargersvd() stores the wrong (non-rsvd) cgroup pointer into the folio's rsvd slot. When the folio is later freed, freehugefolio() unconditionally calls both hugetlbcgroupunchargefolio() and hugetlbcgroupunchargefoliorsvd(). The rsvd uncharge reads back the wrong cgroup from the folio and decrements a counter that was never charged for that cgroup, causing a pagecounter underflow: pagecounter underflow: -512 nrpages=512 WARNING: mm/pagecounter.c:61 at pagecountercancel Fix this by introducing a separate hcgrsvd pointer exclusively for the rsvd charge path, keeping the rsvd and non-rsvd charges fully independent through their charge, commit, and error uncharge paths.

Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required to trigger this issue?
Exploitation requires local access, low privileges, high attack complexity, and no user interaction. The affected path involves hugetlb cgroup reservation and non-reservation charging when map_chg is set.
What is the impact if the issue is triggered?
The mismatched reserved hugetlb cgroup uncharge can decrement a page counter that was never charged, causing a page_counter underflow warning. The supplied severity vector rates confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact as high.
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are identified as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, ubuntu/linux-riscv, and ubuntu/linux-gkeop.
How can administrators recognize that the issue may have occurred?
Kernel logs may contain a page counter underflow message, such as "page_counter underflow: -512 nr_pages=512", along with a warning at mm/page_counter.c:61 in page_counter_cancel.
