UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72214: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: power: supply: cpcap-battery: Fix missing nvmemdeviceput() causing reference leak In cpcapbatterydetectbatterytype(), the reference to an nvmem device obtained via nvmemdevicefind() is not released with nvmemdeviceput() on the success or read-failure paths, causing a permanent reference leak. The driver’s retry logic on subsequent battery property reads can compound this leak, preventing the nvmem device from ever being freed. Found by code review.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are most likely to be affected by this issue?
The issue is in the cpcap-battery power-supply driver, so exposure depends on whether the affected kernel is running that driver and it performs battery-type detection using an nvmem device. The listed Ubuntu kernel packages are ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, and ubuntu/linux-gkeop.
What activity triggers the reference leak?
The leak occurs when cpcap_battery_detect_battery_type() obtains an nvmem device through nvmem_device_find() and does not release it. Both successful detection and nvmem read-failure paths leak the reference; subsequent battery property reads can cause the driver's retry logic to compound the leak.
What is the operational impact if the issue is present?
Leaked references can accumulate permanently and prevent the nvmem device from being freed. The provided information describes this as a resource-reference leak rather than an attacker-controlled code-execution issue.
