UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72218: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: lockd: Plug nlmfile refcount leak on cached nlmdofopen() failure The cached-file path in nlmlookupfile() reaches the found: label unconditionally, even when nlmdofopen() fails. At that label result and file->fcount are updated before the error is returned. The wrappers nlm3svclookupfile() and nlm4svclookupfile() then bail out of their switch without copying result back to their caller, so the proc handler's local nlmfile pointer remains NULL and the cleanup path skips nlmreleasefile(). The fcount increment is never released, and nlmtraversefiles() can no longer reap the file because its refcount never returns to zero between requests. Short-circuit the cached path so neither result nor fcount is touched when nlmdofopen() fails on a hashed nlmfile.

Frequently Asked Questions
What runtime condition triggers the leak?
The leak occurs when lockd takes the cached-file path in nlm_lookup_file() and nlm_do_fopen() fails for an already hashed nlm_file. In that case, the vulnerable path increments the file reference count even though the lookup ultimately returns an error.
What is the operational effect of repeated failures?
The extra reference is not released because the caller’s local nlm_file pointer remains NULL and cleanup skips nlm_release_file(). As a result, nlm_traverse_files() cannot reap the cached file when its reference count fails to return to zero between requests.
Which Ubuntu kernel package families are listed as affected?
The listed package families are ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, ubuntu/linux-riscv, and ubuntu/linux-gkeop.
