UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72219: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: lockd: Plug nlmfile leak when nlmdofopen() fails A client can repeatedly drive nlmdofopen() failures by presenting file handles that the underlying export rejects. After kzallocobj() succeeds in nlmlookupfile(), the freshly allocated nlmfile is not yet inserted into nlmfiles[]. The nlmdofopen() failure path jumps to outunlock, which releases nlmfilemutex and returns without freeing the allocation, so each failure leaks one nlmfile. Route the failure through outfree so kfree() runs before the function returns.

In nlm_lookup_file(), route the nlm_do_fopen() failure path through out_free instead of out_unlock so kfree() frees the allocated nlm_file before the function returns.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can trigger the resource leak?
An NLM client that can present file handles to the affected lockd service can repeatedly trigger the leak when the underlying export rejects those handles.
What is required to exploit this issue?
The attacker needs to cause repeated nlm_do_fopen() failures after nlm_lookup_file() has allocated an nlm_file. This is done by supplying file handles that the underlying export rejects.
What is the impact of repeated exploitation?
Each qualifying failure leaks one nlm_file allocation. Repeated requests can therefore consume kernel memory.
How can I tell whether the vulnerable failure path is being exercised?
The issue occurs when rejected file handles cause nlm_do_fopen() to fail after a new nlm_file has been allocated but before it is inserted into nlm_files[]. The provided data does not specify a log message or other direct detection indicator.
