UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72224: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-aws vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nvdimm/btt: Free arenas on bttinit() error paths The arenas allocated by discoverarenas() or createarenas() are not freed on some error paths in bttinit(). This leaks memory when BTT initialization fails. Call freearenas() from the affected error paths to release the allocations. [ as: commit message and log edits ]

Call free_arenas() from the affected btt_init() error paths to release arenas allocated by discover_arenas() or create_arenas().

Frequently Asked Questions
What systems are realistically exposed to this issue?
Systems running one of the listed Ubuntu kernel packages are potentially affected when NVDIMM Block Translation Table (BTT) initialization is attempted and fails. The issue is a kernel-memory leak rather than a described data disclosure or privilege-escalation condition.
What condition is needed to trigger the memory leak?
BTT initialization must encounter an error after arenas have been allocated by discover_arenas() or create_arenas(). The provided information does not identify the specific initialization failures that lead to the affected error paths.
How can I determine whether this issue has occurred already?
The provided information does not specify a log message, observable indicator, or diagnostic command for detecting prior occurrences. Investigation would need to focus on failed BTT initialization events and memory growth, but no concrete detection criteria are provided.
What mitigation is available if an updated kernel cannot be deployed immediately?
No workaround or configuration-based mitigation is provided. Limiting or avoiding failed BTT initialization attempts would avoid the described trigger, but the supplied data does not specify how to do so.
