UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72232: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: batman-adv: ensure minimal ethernet header on TX As documented in commit 8bd67ebb50c0 ("net: bridge: xmit: make sure we have at least eth header len bytes"), it is possible by for a local user with eBPF TC hook access to attach a tc filter which truncates the packet and redirects to an batadv interface. But the code assumes that at least ETHHLEN bytes are available and thus might read outside of the available buffer. The batadvinterfacetx() must therefore always check itself if enough data is available for the ethernet header and don't rely on minheaderlen.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can exploit this issue?
A local user needs access to attach an eBPF traffic-control (TC) hook or filter. The issue is triggered by truncating a packet and redirecting it to a batman-adv interface.
What systems are exposed?
Systems using an affected Ubuntu kernel package are relevant only where batman-adv interfaces are in use and a user can attach eBPF TC filters. The listed packages include ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, and their listed FIPS variants.
What happens during exploitation?
The batman-adv transmit path may assume an Ethernet header is present after a TC filter truncates the packet. It can then read beyond the available packet buffer.
What is the remediation?
Apply the kernel update that includes the fix ensuring batadv_interface_tx() verifies that enough data is available for the Ethernet header. If updating cannot occur immediately, restrict untrusted users' ability to attach eBPF TC filters and avoid redirecting such traffic to batman-adv interfaces.
