UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72236: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: s390/perfcpumcf: Add missing arrayindexnospec() to hwperfeventinit() ev variable is userspace controlled via event->attr.config and used as an array index after bounds checking, but without speculation barriers. Add the missing arrayindexnospec() call to prevent speculative execution.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
The issue affects the s390 perf_cpum_cf code path in the listed Ubuntu Linux kernel packages. Systems not using the s390 architecture or not exercising this performance-event initialization path are not indicated by the provided data as exposed.
What access does an attacker need?
An attacker needs local access and low privileges. The event selector is controlled through event->attr.config, and exploitation also has high attack complexity with additional attack requirements.
What is the potential impact?
The stated impact is high confidentiality impact. The vulnerability is intended to prevent speculative execution from using a userspace-controlled event value as an array index after bounds checking.
How can I determine whether a kernel includes the fix?
Check whether the kernel source or vendor update includes the s390/perf_cpum_cf change that adds array_index_nospec() in __hw_perf_event_init(). The referenced upstream commit is 49145bce539117db4b6e9e83c0e5ef528e361050.
