UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72237: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: perf/x86/amd/brs: Fix kernel address leakage A user-only branch stack can contain branches that originate from the kernel. As a result, kernel addresses are exposed to user space even when PERFSAMPLEBRANCHUSER is requested. On AMD processors supporting X86FEATUREBRS (Zen 3 only), perf can still report entries such as SYSRET/interrupt returns for which the branch-from addresses are in the kernel. E.g. $ perf record -j any,u -c 4000 -e branch-brs -o - -- \ perf bench syscall basic --loop 1000 | \ perf script -i - -F brstack|tr ' ' '\n'| \ grep -E '0x[89a-f][0-9a-f]{15}' ... 0xffffffff810001c4/0x72e2e32955eb/-/-/-/0//- 0xffffffff810001c4/0x72e2d94a9821/-/-/-/0//- 0xffffffff810001c4/0x72e2d94ffa1b/-/-/-/0//- ... BRS provides no hardware branch filtering, so privilege level filtering is performed entirely in software. However, amdbrsmatchplm() only validates the branch-to address against the requested privilege levels. For branches from the kernel to user space, the branch-from address is left unchecked and is leaked. Extend the software filter to also validate the branch-from address, so that any branch record whose branch-from address is in the kernel is dropped when PERFSAMPLEBRANCHUSER is requested.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are realistically exposed to this issue?
The issue affects AMD Zen 3 processors that support X86_FEATURE_BRS when perf branch-stack sampling is used. The listed Ubuntu kernel packages include linux-riscv, linux-realtime, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-azure-fde, linux-gke, linux-hwe-edge, and linux-gkeop.
What does an attacker need to exploit the disclosure?
An attacker needs the ability to run perf branch-stack sampling configured for user branches, such as PERF_SAMPLE_BRANCH_USER, on an affected AMD system. The leaked data consists of kernel branch-from addresses associated with branches returning from the kernel to user space.
Are all perf branch samples affected?
The described leakage occurs because AMD BRS has no hardware branch filtering and the software filter previously checked only the branch-to address. Records for kernel-to-user transitions, including SYSRET or interrupt returns, can therefore expose the kernel branch-from address despite a user-only request.
How can I check whether a system is exhibiting the issue?
On an affected system, user-only perf BRS output can contain branch-stack entries whose branch-from address is a kernel address, for example an address beginning with 0xffffffff. The provided example uses perf record with the branch-brs event and user branch filtering, then inspects the brstack output for kernel-range addresses.
