UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72238: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: x86/boot: Validate console=uart8250 baud rate to fix early boot hang When the baud rate is empty, 0, invalid, or overflows to 0 when stored as an int, the system will hang during early boot because of a division by zero in earlyserialinit(). Fall back to DEFAULTBAUD when the resulting baud rate is 0 to prevent an early system hang.

Frequently Asked Questions
What systems are realistically exposed to this issue?
Systems using the affected Ubuntu kernel packages are exposed only when their early boot kernel command line includes a console=uart8250 setting with an empty, zero, invalid, or integer-overflowing baud rate. The listed packages include ubuntu/linux and the AWS, Azure, GCP, and FIPS kernel variants.
What does an attacker or operator need to trigger the problem?
Triggering the issue requires control over, or the ability to introduce, the baud-rate value in a console=uart8250 boot parameter. A malformed value that resolves to zero causes a division by zero in early_serial_init() and can hang the system during early boot.
Is a default configuration affected?
The provided information identifies the malformed console=uart8250 baud-rate parameter as the trigger. It does not indicate that systems without such a parameter are affected.
What can be done if the kernel update cannot be applied immediately?
Inspect and correct bootloader or kernel command-line configuration so that console=uart8250 uses a valid, nonzero baud rate. Avoid empty, zero, invalid, or excessively large baud-rate values that can overflow to zero when stored as an int.
How can administrators tell whether they may already be affected?
Review the kernel command line and bootloader configuration for console=uart8250 parameters, then check whether the baud rate is missing, zero, invalid, or large enough to overflow to zero as an int. An affected configuration may manifest as a system hang during early boot.
