UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72244: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: gpu/buddy: bail out of tryharder when alignment cannot be honoured The tryharder contiguous fallback could return a range whose start offset did not match the caller's minblocksize. When a candidate's start is misaligned, realign it: free the misaligned run and reallocate exactly @size at the next lower minblocksize boundary. This keeps the returned size unchanged with no surplus to trim, and rejects the request only when no aligned candidate fits. v2: align misaligned candidates down to minblocksize instead of bailing out, for both the RHS and LHS paths (Matthew).

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are identified as affected?
The affected software list includes ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, and ubuntu/linux-gkeop.
What access does an attacker need to exploit this issue?
The supplied severity vector indicates local attack access, low attack complexity, low privileges required, and no user interaction. It also indicates potential high impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
What condition triggers the vulnerable behavior?
The issue occurs in the GPU buddy allocator's try_harder contiguous fallback when it returns a candidate range with a start offset that does not satisfy the caller's minimum block-size alignment requirement.
