UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72252: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability

Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: nftsetpipapo: don't leak bad clone into future transaction On memory allocation failure the cloned nftpipapomatch can enter a bad state: - some fields can have their lookup tables resized while others did not - bits might have been toggled - scratch map can be undersized which also means m->bsizemax can be lower than what is required This means that the next insertion in the same batch can trigger out-of-bounds writes. Furthermore, a failure in the first can result in the bad clone to leak into the next transaction because the abort callback is never executed in this case (the upper layer saw an error and no attempt to allocate a transactional request was made). Record a state for the nftpipapomatch structure: - NEW (pristine clone) - MOD (modified clone with good state) - ERR (potentially bogus content) Then make it so that deletes and insertions fail when the clone entered ERR state. In case the very first insert attempt results in an error, free the clone right away.

In netfilter nft_set_pipapo, track nft_pipapo_match clone states as NEW (pristine), MOD (modified with good state), and ERR (potentially bogus); make deletes and insertions fail when the clone is in ERR, and free the clone immediately if the very first insert attempt fails.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Who is realistically exposed to this issue?

Systems using the listed Ubuntu kernel variants are exposed when they use netfilter nftables pipapo sets and perform set insertions in a transaction batch. Exploitation requires local access with low privileges.

2

What conditions are required to trigger the out-of-bounds write?

A memory allocation failure must leave a cloned nft_pipapo_match in an inconsistent state, followed by another insertion in the same batch. A failed first insertion can also allow the bad clone to persist into a later transaction.

3

Can a failed operation affect later nftables transactions?

Yes. When the first insertion fails, the abort callback may not run, allowing the invalid clone to leak into the next transaction. Subsequent insertions can then operate on undersized scratch-map state or mismatched lookup-table state.

4

What does the fix change?

The fix tracks cloned nft_pipapo_match state as NEW, MOD, or ERR. Insertions and deletions are rejected after the clone enters ERR state, and a clone is freed immediately if the first insertion attempt fails.
