UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72253: High severity ubuntu/linux-aws vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: nfconntracksip: validate skbdst() before accessing it tc ingress and openvswitch do not guarantee routing information to be available. These subsystems use the conntrack helper infrastructure, and the SIP helper relies on the skbdst() to be present if sipexternalmedia is set to 1 (which is disabled by default as a module parameter). This effectively disables the sipexternalmedia toggle for these subsystems without resulting in a crash.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems using the affected Ubuntu kernel packages are exposed when the netfilter SIP conntrack helper is used through tc ingress or Open vSwitch and the sip_external_media module parameter is enabled. The listed packages include standard, AWS, Azure, GCP, and FIPS Ubuntu kernel variants.
Is the default configuration affected?
The triggering sip_external_media module parameter is disabled by default. The issue requires it to be explicitly enabled.
What must an attacker be able to do to trigger the denial of service?
An attacker can trigger the issue remotely with low complexity and no privileges or user interaction, in an affected configuration. The affected traffic must reach the SIP conntrack helper via tc ingress or Open vSwitch, where routing information may be unavailable.
What can be done if updating the kernel is not immediately possible?
Keep sip_external_media disabled, which is the default setting. Avoid using the SIP conntrack helper with tc ingress or Open vSwitch while that parameter is enabled.
