UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72261: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ASoC: SOF: ipc3-control: Validate size in sndsofupdatecontrol In sndsofupdatecontrol(), firmware-provided cdata->numelems is checked against localcdata->data->size but never against the actual allocation size. If localcdata->data->size was previously set to an inconsistent value, the memcpy could write past the allocated buffer. Add a bounds check to ensure numelems fits within the available space in the ipccontroldata allocation before copying.

In snd_sof_update_control(), add a bounds check verifying that firmware-provided cdata->num_elems fits within the actual allocation size of ipc_control_data before copying, rather than checking only local_cdata->data->size.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is exposed to this issue?
Systems using one of the listed Ubuntu kernel packages are potentially exposed where the SOF IPC3 control update path is used. Exploitation requires local access with low privileges; no user interaction is required.
What conditions are needed to trigger the out-of-bounds write?
The control data must have an inconsistent stored size, and firmware-provided num_elems must pass the existing check against that inconsistent value while exceeding the actual ipc_control_data allocation. The vulnerable copy occurs in snd_sof_update_control().
What is the impact if exploited?
The vulnerability can allow a local low-privileged attacker to compromise confidentiality, integrity, and availability, as reflected by the CVSS vector with high impacts in all three categories.
How can I determine whether a system is affected?
Check whether the system is running one of the listed Ubuntu kernel package variants and whether its kernel includes the fix that validates num_elems against the actual available ipc_control_data allocation. The provided data does not include fixed package versions.
