UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72268: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fbdev: tdfxfb: fix potential memory leak in tdfxfbprobe() In tdfxfbprobe(), the memory allocated for modelist using fbvideomodetomodelist() when CONFIGFB3DFXI2C is defined, is not freed in the subsequent error paths. Fix that by calling fbdestroymodelist().

Call fb_destroy_modelist() in tdfxfb_probe() error paths to free the modelist allocated by fb_videomode_to_modelist() when CONFIG_FB_3DFX_I2C is defined.

Frequently Asked Questions
What systems are exposed to this issue?
The issue applies to the listed Ubuntu kernel packages when the tdfxfb framebuffer driver is used and the kernel is built with CONFIG_FB_3DFX_I2C enabled. The affected package list includes the standard Ubuntu, FIPS, AWS, Azure, and GCP kernel variants.
What is required to trigger the leak?
The tdfxfb_probe() path must allocate a mode list through fb_videomode_to_modelist(), followed by a subsequent error path that does not release that allocation. This behavior is specifically associated with CONFIG_FB_3DFX_I2C.
What should be done if the issue is suspected?
Apply an Ubuntu kernel update containing the fix, which adds fb_destroy_modelist() cleanup for the affected error paths. The provided information does not identify a configuration workaround or a method to confirm prior memory leakage.
