·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fbdev: efifb: fix memory leak in efifbprobe() Since commit 73ce73c30ba9 ("fbdev: Transfer video= option strings to caller; clarify ownership") the string returned from fbgetoptions() is expected to be freed by the caller, but the string is not freed in efifbprobe(). Fix that by freeing the option string after setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?

The listed packages are ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, and ubuntu/linux-gkeop.

2

What condition triggers the memory leak?

The leak occurs in efifb_probe() when handling the string returned by fb_get_options(). Since the referenced ownership change, that returned option string must be freed by the caller, but efifb_probe() did not free it after setup.

3

What does the upstream fix do?

The fix frees the option string in efifb_probe() after setup, addressing the unreleased allocation.
