UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72282: High severity ubuntu/linux-azure vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: KVM: Move kvmiobusgetdev() locking responsibilities to callers kvmiobusgetdev() returns a device that is only matched by the address, and nothing else. This can cause a lifetime issue if the matched device is not the expected type, as by the time the caller can introspect the object, it might be gone (the srcu lock having been dropped). Given that there is only a single user of this helper, the simplest option is to move the locking responsibility to the caller, which can keep the srcu lock held for as long as it wants. Note that this aligns with other kvmiobus() helpers, which already require the srcu lock to be held by the callers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips, and ubuntu/linux-oracle.
What access would an attacker need to exploit this issue?
The supplied severity vector indicates local access, low attack complexity, low privileges required, and no user interaction. It also indicates potential impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
What code path is involved in the vulnerability?
The issue involves KVM's kvm_io_bus_get_dev() helper. A device selected only by address can have a lifetime issue when the SRCU lock is dropped before the caller can verify the object's type.
What is the remediation described by the fix?
The fix moves SRCU locking responsibility to the caller, allowing the caller to retain the lock while it inspects and uses the returned device. This aligns the helper with other kvm_io_bus helpers that already require callers to hold the SRCU lock.
