UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72284: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: KVM: x86: Ignore pending PV EOI if the vCPU has since disabled PV EOIs Ignore KVM's internal "service pending PV EOI" request if the vCPU has disabled PV EOIs since the request was made. Asserting that PV EOIs are enabled can fail if reading guest memory in pveoigetuser() fails, i.e. if pveoitestandclrpending() bails early, and the vCPU also disables PV EOIs. kernel BUG at arch/x86/kvm/lapic.c:3338! Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
The affected software list includes Ubuntu linux, linux-fips, and the AWS, Azure, and GCP kernel variants, including their FIPS variants. The failure occurs in KVM's x86 code path, so exposure is relevant to hosts using KVM virtualization on x86.
What conditions are needed to trigger the failure?
A KVM vCPU must have a pending internal request to service a paravirtualized EOI, then disable PV EOIs before that request is handled. The described failure also involves guest-memory reading failing in pv_eoi_get_user(), causing the pending-EOI handling path to exit early before the vCPU disables PV EOIs.
What is the practical impact?
The vulnerable path can trigger a kernel BUG in arch/x86/kvm/lapic.c, resulting in an invalid-opcode Oops in the KVM module. The supplied severity vector identifies availability impact to the vulnerable system and subsequent system as high, with no stated confidentiality or integrity impact.
