UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72289: Critical severity ubuntu/linux-azure vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: KVM: arm64: vgic: Check the interrupt is still ours before migrating it vgicpruneaplist() drops both aplistlock and irqlock while migrating an interrupt to another vCPU. After reacquiring the locks it only checks that the affinity is unchanged (targetvcpu == vgictargetoracle(irq)) before moving the interrupt, which assumes that an interrupt whose affinity is preserved is still queued on this vCPU's aplist. That assumption no longer holds if the interrupt is taken off the aplist while the locks are dropped. vgicflushpendinglpis() removes the interrupt from the list and sets irq->vcpu to NULL, but leaves enabled/pending/targetvcpu untouched. As the interrupt is still enabled and pending, vgictargetoracle() returns the same targetvcpu, so the affinity check passes and listdel() is run a second time on an entry that has already been removed. Also check that the interrupt is still assigned to this vCPU (irq->vcpu == vcpu) before moving it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are affected by this issue?
The issue affects Ubuntu kernels listed as ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips, and ubuntu/linux-oracle. The vulnerable code is in KVM's arm64 virtual GIC handling, so exposure is relevant to systems using KVM virtualization on arm64.
What condition triggers the faulty operation?
The condition occurs when an interrupt is removed from a vCPU's ap_list while vgic_prune_ap_list() has released its locks during interrupt migration. If the interrupt remains enabled and pending with the same target vCPU, the prior affinity check can pass and cause a second list_del() on an entry already removed from the list.
What is the impact of successful exploitation?
The supplied severity vector rates the issue critical at 9.3 and indicates high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact, with scope changed. It also indicates local attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges required, and no user interaction required.
